NO spoilers, I promise!!

My friends and I decide that Borders will be a madhouse with it's midnight release party.  That Wal-Mart would be a much tamer option to the crowds of 'Twihard' fans camped out at the major book stores.

I call at 10:00pm to be sure they'd be putting it out at midnight.

I speak to someone with a personality.  How refreshing.  She assures me that, yes, they'll have it out at midnight, no, there were no crowds yet, and, yes, I was the first one to call about it.

By 11:15, there are only three of us sober enough to make the trip to Wal-Mart.

Okay, FIRST of all...Friday nights are CRAZY around here (I warned you in earlier posts) and second, you KNOW this book has to be good for me to go to Wal-Mart...at midnight.

We arrive at around 11:30 to a very empty, very quiet superstore.  No crowds, no lines...just us three.  We find some poor woman stocking candy and aske her where we should set up camp to wait for the book.

She has NO idea what we are talking about.

In retrospect, not all three of us were TOTALLY sober.  I don't drink very often, so I was the only totally sober one...with two not so sober friends in Wal-Mart...at midnight...trying to ask the candy stocker where the vampire book would be making it's appearance.

She actually has the presence of mind to go PAGE someone to ask while my not so sober friends go to get camping chairs to set up before anyone else gets there...twenty minutes before the book goes on sale.  I kind of figure that if there isn't a crowd then, there probably isn't going to be one twenty minutes from then.

I was right.

My friends wander back eventually without the chairs, but with tank tops instead (we're classy that way) and we peruse the hair magazines.

Now, I'm not SAYING there was any candy stolen from the candy lady's trolley while she had gotten lost paging someone in "books".    I'm just saying that being in Wal-Mart in the dead of night makes one...DO things she wouldn't normally do.  That, and a vehement hatred of the establishment.  I totally blame my not so sober friends.  Peer pressure never goes out of style.

Moving on.

At 11:54 a very mousy young lady wheels a dolly full of boxes over to the book section with big yellow stickers warning her not to sell the contents before midnight.

She takes this warning VERY seriously.

The three of us...alone...in Wal-Mart...with stolen candy...stand and watch her set up her flimsy little card table.  We ask her if we could just go ahead and take our books.

"No."  She says with finality.

We sport our best bewildered (and chocolate covered) faces.  "Why not?"  We ask.

"Because we can't ring up the book until midnight."

We look around at the Zamboni floor polisher, the oblivious candy stocker lady, the weird guy buying a crib mattress at 11:54, and at each other.

"But there are only three of us here.  Can't we just take our books?  It's 11:54."

"No."  She says again.

Now me being sober is in NO WAY any guarantee that my behavior is ever normal.  The candy snatching should be a clear indicator of that, people.  So, in my famous dry wit I say, "We can take you down, sister."

BIG mistake.

The mousy book lady wheels around and says to me, "I've got the police on my speed dial!" While she TAKES HER CELL PHONE OUT OF IT'S HOLSTER.

The three of us stand shocked.  It's now 11:56.  We can hear the buzz of the fluorescent lights above in the stunned silence.

"I was kidding."  I say before taking a big, obnoxious bite out of my stolen Almond Snickers  bar.

"Well, I'm not."  She says.  "They really are on speed dial on my phone."

She carefully puts the phone back in it's holster in an 'I-told-her' sort of way, turns back to the little card table, and commences stacking the books.

It takes her until 11:57 to finish stacking the books and then she turns around, crosses her arms and stands guard over the little table of books for the next. three. minutes.   With the three of us staring back at her, eating our candy that we now feel NO guilt in pilfering.

At exactly 12:00 (because she's watching her digital Timex sports watch with the black plastic band) she moves aside and watches all three of us warily as we pick up our books and giggle to the check out where we have a sudden bout of remorse and end up paying for our stupid candy bars.

Then we laugh our way out of Wal-Mart feeling very smug at outsmarting all the yahoos that waited in lines for two hours just to buy the book at Borders.

PB told me this morning that there were still at least thirty books sitting on the little table in Wal-Mart.

Figures.

How was it?  It was brilliant. It was moving. It gave me closure to the saga...I am complete.  It was everything I needed it to be.  I started reading on Saturday morning and finished on Sunday morning.  All 754 glorious pages.

I know that sounds a little over the top for a book, but the series has been that good for me.  I can't stress enough that if you haven't read the Twilight books, they are worth buying...in hardcover. I did.  I don't loan them out.

You got off easy...and humorously. My tale? Too much to go into here--will tell ya later.

But...

$37 worth of cab fares, $16 for THE book, and hours spent reading poolside (i.e. no kids, fun beverages, and smokin' hot tan!) at the Hilton Austin...WORTH EVERY PENNY. WORTH EVERY MINUTE. It. Was. Beautiful.

Of course I'm already rereading it.

This sounds like a perfect Seinfeld episode!! I'm still laughing at the "We can take you down sister!"
I haven't started this series yet, but I plan to start reading Twilight this week. I've heard SO much buzz about this series.
Thanks for the Sunday night laugh.

My Twilight is signed by Stephenie Meyer... NO ONE touches that baby.

I feel totally satisfied. And am still caressing the book.

I haven't bought the fourth book yet but the entire eight hour drive home today from our family reunion I thought about it. I am going out first thing tomorrow to buy it.

We were in the country, with no cell reception or Internet, no book stores, complete isolation, which was fun, but it's nice to be back home with my computer...and bookstores!

I can't wait to read the fourth book. AMAZING series.

Rhea said...

BTW, loved your Wal-Mart story. hehe I wish you'd taken that biotch out!

Wow...hadn't heard of this series until this week and now it seems like it is EVERYWHERE! Don't worry, I won't ask to borrow it.

Awesome story! I love finding the better/easier way to do things.

I, on the other hand, was one of the ones waiting at 0 dark 30 for the new iPhone. Scored the first one in Montgomery even!

EKKK HOW.DID.I.EVER.MISS.THIS

I must go and get these. I don't know how I missed a great book series. UGH. Need to get on this QUICK.

Oh Chef went and got my last Harry Potter book at midnight from Walmart too. He too said there was no line. LOL

greedygrace said...

LMAO!

I really need to get on this Twilight bandwagon.

I love the wierd guy buying the crib mattress. Reminded me so much of my husband. I had sent him to Wal-Mart to get a crib mattress the night before our home inspection for our adoption. I wonder if there were any slightly intoxicated girls eating chocolate and watching him then?

angie said...

Glad you got your book without being thrown in the slammer. Can't wait to read it.

Karen said...

I'm currently reading the first book. However, I appear to have misplaced it. Not sure if I've accidently packed it or if it's under the big pile of clothes I'm sorting through. Bit frustrating.

Mind you, I have gotten far enough into the book, to be very sure that the actor playing Edward, in the film, is NOT the one that they should have chosen for the part!

Your Walmart saga sounds like my first midnight trip there to buy a Harry Potter book. Then for the subsequent books, people discovered Walmart and there were lines. But they had cake and soda!!

ugagirl30 said...

Wow-you are a scary book buyer!! Remind me to never sell books where you live.

But seriously, she must have felt brave to stand between three women and something they really wanted. She had on her brave-girl panties that night!

Toni said...

I loved loved loved the book! With teeth barred, fists curled oh wait i am not a vampire, I must remember this. I got it Saturday and when I went to check out the guy has to hand it to me past the security thing and he kept teasing me by giving it and taking it back right when i would get ready to take it , well after about 3 times of this I almost lost it LOL. I didn't put it down and yes I asked to leave work early on Sunday so it would not cut into my time of reading.

Mekhismom said...

What a funny story! I am close to the end of the book -with in-laws in town and other visitors I have not been able to read it in one sitting. But I am truly savoring it.

Tami said...

I can totally picture that lady guarding the books - too funny!

Jen said...

I can't believe that you actually said that. You are so brave, well maybe not.
Anyway, I am half way through the first book. I got a baby sitter for today and I am going out for a few hours to read and get a pedicure. But I am really excited about the reading. I can't wait to see what happens.

OMgosh. Great recap. Guess I've been all ditzed living in a whole or something. I just heard about the Twilight craze a few weeks ago. Guess I should be jumping on the bangwagon.

Jaci said...

The book Nazi told you! "No book for you! Next!"

In her defense, maybe there is a register report that will show if a book, CD, DVD, whatever is sold before midnight and she'll get in trouble. In the world of retail, the inane reports know no limits, and 5 bosses will be sure to remind you of your mistake--repeatedly. But, guarding the table like a bouncer and warning the police are on your speed dial? That's really queer.

WalMart is a creepy place at night. I had to go there recently for Children's Tylenol. No one was there except for a few people similar to the ones you mentioned. I had no self control. I sang along to the music and I may have done some side-skipping like they teach you in kindergarten gym class. It could be the lights humming or the fact that the air filters get turned off at night and all the polyester smells mingle together. I don't know.

I have heard a lot about this series but I have never read one of the books. I think I may have to look into getting the first book. I have never been a fan of vamppire books but I have heard nothing but good reviews from people that have read this series.

Hey come over to my blog and check out the awesome giveaway I am having this week!!

Well, if you're not loaning them out, Heather, then I have no way to read them....maybe I'll try the library. I hear they loan out books. :)

Kat said...

I bought it. I did. I got it at Tar-jay with 5 million people there to buy school supplies. So, I don't have to wait for my number at the library. But I did leave my name in the queue...just so I could "know" how long it would have taken to get the book. I have a little less than half way to go...

Thanks for the no spoilers. But Walmart? Really?

StitchinByTheLake said...

I confess. I had to ask my daughter, the high school librarian, what Twilight was. :( She said, "Mother! I can't believe you haven't read these! I'm bringing you the first 3 right now!" And she did. They are beside my bed. I am babysitting with 2 grandchildren all this week. They will continue to sit by my bed until later, but I promise to read them. Sometime. A vampire? Really? And this is good? Blessings, marlene

Ok, I have clearly lived outside the US too long as I have no idea what books you're talking about...

I will say though that I always love reading a good book - and can never put them down either! I will stay up all hours of the night... a guilty pleasure that I usually regret the next day when I'm exhausted with the kids.

Rhonda said...

I've really got to get me those books!

I just bought the first book and I really hope I enjoy it as much as you and everyone else :)

Hating Barnes & Noble right now. They let me down.
I pre-ordered my book through them, just like I always did with my Harry Potter books. However they did not deliver it to me the day it was released like they did with the Harry Potter books. Saturday I got a nice email telling me that my order had been sent to the warehouse and would shipped shortly. Lame. So yeah, I haven't read it yet. I'm sad.

Great story! I'm #157 on the library's request list, but they have a ton of copies so I should be able to get it in a week or so. Maybe.

Very funny WalMart story. I love WalMart stories. They scare me. I am almost done with Eslispe and can hardly wait until I can get my hands on Breaking Dawn...AND...you started it all with, "Edward, bite me!" Too funny! I am glad you loved the book.

Hilarious... I ordered the book online to avoid lines...little did I know all I needed to do was head to the nearest Wal-mart?

Whew! Well, I'm feeling a bit more caught up culture-wise. I now know what the series is and my oldest went to a CRAZY release party at a book store in our quirky city and came back with pictures--so I got to see many of my fellow community members dressed in prom dresses and capes and the like--there was even one gal there with puppets representing the main characters!

So I'm feeling a little more hip today...all thanks to SITS....since my mommy radar didn't connect that the books my daughter was reading were part of this cultural phenom!
Blessings!

Oh I wish I were there just watching this whole thing happen. Honestly, crazy wal-mart lady! And crazier yet, the man buying a baby mattress that late at night! YIKES!!

After witnessing an adult man spank, yes spank!!, his adult wife for "being sassy" in Wal-mart a couple months ago, that place leaves me feeling a little weird! Why is it that that place attracks weirdos??

Anyway, still finishing up the 4th book. Hope it's a good ending!!

And I don't loan my books either:)

Breanne Vasquez said...

I have not read them and I do not even know what they are about. I guess I need to go buy and read.

Oh my gosh..that whole Wal mart scene played out like a sitcom in my head....chomping on the contraband candy bar while telling off the lady at THE Walmart...funny funny funny. And yeah, I'm on the bandwagon finally. Glad to hear it resolves in a satisfactory way!

Angela said...

First, let me say that I am INSANELY jealous that you got to read a book start to finish this weekend. I suppose I could make that happen but, oh, the things I would have to give up.

Second, I SO wish I could have been a yelling-mama-to-my-misbehavin'-kid-flies fly on the wall for that whole exchange with such a typical Wal-Mart employee. Rules, people, heard of 'em? Those peeps mean business!

Thank you for a funny post!

That is soooo funny! That was totally me last summer with the Harry Potter book...it came out right around my birthday and I spend my whole glorious birthday reading that book! I guess I need to jump on the bandwagon and start this series...I'm not so sure about the vampire thing though....

Veggie Mom said...

I know, I know--I really have to start in on "The Twilight Series"! How could I have gotten so woefully behind on my reading? I've read more about Book 4 in the last few days than about any book in the history of literature, I'll bet, even HP! Thanks, though, for sharing a quite humorous tale! BTW, Uncle Lynn has authorized another Great Pop'rs Giveaway--it starts tomorrow, so stay tuned!

I was SHOCKED to find that the airport Borders had it on sale and AVAILABLE yesterday! I couldn't believe it wasn't sold out! I can't wait to crack the spine! Waiting until the kids head back to Texas!
BTW: I would have snorted in laughter at the Cell phone in it's holllister like a gun! That's a huge joke between my husband and myself! Might have choked on my candy bar trying not to bust up laughing! And Wal-Ho freaks me out also. I've been followed to my car TWICE leaving that Stinkhole!

Nicole said...

That is tooo funny. I wish I could have been a fly on the wall at that Walmart to watch you and your friends. I'm waiting for some quite time so I can read uninterupted. That might never happen though so maybe I should just start reading.

I need to move to Colorado. I go into our Wal*Mart at midnight and it's as if it was 5 pm. Go in at 3 AM to buy your kids medicine---same thing. IT'S NEVER, EVER EMPTY OF ITS FREAK SHOW!

Glad you liked the book. Even glad-er that you did the "right thing" :)! (take that to mean not taking out the Wal*Mart lady or paying for the candybar!)

Rebecca Jo said...

That is hilarious! And WHY would she need the number on speed dial? Has she had to make that phone call before? I can only imagine 3 of you standing off against this one person - sounds like a great memory you wont forget for a long time!

I'm so relieved that we didn't have to rally the SITS girls to wire money and make your bail!
Yep, this is the next series that I'll read...around Halloween, when I can sit outside on the porch in the chilly air, eating an apple... not as good as a stolen candy bar, but you get the idea!
I love the fact that everyone is so entranced by this series. It MUST be amazing.

Hello, Police? You need to arrest this crazy Twilight fan here at the Wal Mart. hahaha
I bought mine at Costco Sunday for $13 - Ridiculous!
The Barnes and Noble campers cramped my style. I threw my hands in the air. I'm glad I waited until Sunday.
I'm totally with you - LOVED IT!
Now, have you read The Host?

I got Twilight last night and started it. I like it and it is good but I'm not super into it (as I didn't stay up all night and finish it).

I almost bought the new book at our grocery store as it was 40% off reg price, but then I figured I best read the first one to make sure I want it.

Haha! That is hysterical! I got to our Barnes and Noble at 12:45AM and the line was still at the back of the store and wrapped all the way around. I have to admit I liked the book, but there were some things about it that made me annoyed. Some things were just too convenient for me.

Z's Mom said...

Ok, that story had me laughing..I'm with Debbie, I could see it totally playing out in my head. "Do you feel lucky, Punk. Well, do ya?"

And Molly's response...I could totally see her kicking that lady.

I just started the 2nd book last night...I have been having trouble finding the 3rd book. The 4th book is ALL over the place...no problems there. Why is there a shortage of the 3rd book?

I got it today at lunch at Borders but paid more for than I wanted too....

Right now, where I am in book 2, I'm really mad at Edward. Guys are so dumb sometimes. And Bella, geez...can you be anymore dramatic! Ok, I'll quit posting in your comments now... :)

Hot Tub Lizzy said...

Now if that had been Target, when you said "We can take you down" the nice Red-shirted employee would have joked back and said something like "I dare you" or "I'll bite your neck" because they would be well read and know WHY you're waiting for the book....

Wal-M*rt sucks.
