A few months ago, my dad lured me down to New Orleans under the guise of "helping them decorate". I knew this was a ruse because his wife is a fine decorator and has awesome taste. Who am I to turn down Cajun food and free latte's, though?
I got to go by myself too.
Don't hate me because I stroll the Garden District without kids.
Let's start with the important stuff. Mint Juleps.

Now, I know what you're thinking. You're thinking..."Heather, honey, please tell me you also visited the beauty shop while you were down there because...you're hair." Alas, I did not. I'm growing it out. Love me, please.

We visited Oak Alley (a very old plantation on the Mississippi river). It, indeed, is very grand and historic and chock full of delicious decorating ideas. We had to work the theme into the trip somehow.
Many famous movies are filmed here including Interview With A Vampire.

Here I am swooning next to the very tree where Tom Cruise, in his role as LeStat, snuck away from a swanky party and attacked a young man who thought something else was going to happen. All while Brad Pitt hid nearby and ate a Pomeranian. We certainly don't hold that against him.

No centuries old plantation is complete without a few random, creepy but strangely intriguing, windows. Look at how only one has the shutters shut. I asked our tour guide who told me that those were attic windows and no one was allowed into the attic anymore as it was used as storage.
Of course.
I stared at them for a long time figuring I'd see a ghost peeking out.
No such luck.
They wouldn't let us take pictures inside, much to my dismay. However, they did let me take a picture of my lunch.

Crawfish etouffee.
I suppose that this may look unappetizing depending on the time of day you're reading it. It's noon here, and I'm really hungry so it looks amazing. It was amazing.

We had alligator tail for our appetizer. It tastes like chicken. No. For real. It does.

And so I sound like I was paying attention to the tour guide (with her Cajun accent that was killing me softly, and I mean that in a good way) and what she was teaching me I am including a picture of the sugar bowls used to boil the sugar cane grown on the plantation. Or something like that.
Look at the pretty flowers!!
And historic golf cart!

And look at this list of slaves that worked on the plantation and how much they cost. I love their names. Hyacinthe was a cook. Of course she was. Are you getting the mental image? I love her. And Antoinette was the laundress. I can picture her too.
Lula put it perfectly when she said that the South is a place where you want to stick your nose in the dirt and inhale deeply.
It's true. It's like going home or something. I was born there, so it's my roots. Maybe that's it.
Okay, that's all for today. I'll write more about my trip another day.

I am in the midst of Southern culture right now (Ya-ya's, Sweet Potato Queens, and True Blood) and this has me planning a trip to N'awlin's as soon as I can get my yankee self out of Massachusetts!
What an awesome trip. I still can't get over the fact that you got to go without kids. And you ate alligator.
You can journal my trip to anywhere anytime!A little lore, a little history, a little food and flowers and an awesome setting - could it get any better?
What a great experience!!
What a nice trip you had, and without kids...such a pity! ;)
Only one thing, I'm not sure Hyacinthe appreciated her name, or being a slave at all.
I wasn't born there and have never been but just thinking about it sounds like home.
I live in Louisville (home of the Kentucky Derby) and I'm pretty sure mint julips come from here. And I'm also pretty sure they taste like Listerine...only worse.
I'm growing my hair out too. I've missed your blog. Thanks for the smile today.
Blessings,
Sandy

What I'm loving from these comments is that clearly NO ONE appreciates this post as much as we do. Nor do they want to stick their noses in the dirt and just inhale till drunk with the scent of southern soil.
I feel sad for non-Southerners.
What if you'd mentioned Viola? All hell would've broken loose up in here. I'd have had your back.
What a rich experience! Oak Alley looks absolutely incredible, and all the bit the quintissential Southern experience. I love your thinking with looking for the ghost in the window! Imagine if Hyacinthe had peeked out and given you a wink! Can you picture living in a home like that? Incredible! The food looks fantastic. Only a true Southern cook can make Crawfish taste like something divine, rather than like mud. I shouldn't be looking at food pictures this early on a Monday. That alligator has my tummy rumbling. Well, better my tum, than a 'gators, right? Have a wonderful week. Jenn
I'm still stuck on the mint julep...oh my does that sound delicious right now!!!
I have fresh mint in my herb garden...oh I really must make myself a mint julep soon!
Glad you enjoyed your trip!
I have a gator tail story to tell! (of and BTW, I am a GA peach and pround of it!) My youngest daughter (17 now, 6 at the time) was with us at a southern seafood restaurant. She didn't hear my hsuband order gator tail appetizer, so when it came to the table, she proceeded to munch as she thought they were chicken tenders. We couldn't help but laugh and tell her what it really was (after she ate like, 3 pieces! She was SO MAD at us! For at least a year, she would not eat a chicken tender at a restaurant. It had to be chicken on a bone so she could make sure what it was, LOL!
Crawfish and alligator tail, all in the same meal. Oh yum. Maybe there's a reason I don't live in the South. Bus the humidity - ewwww! but it's purty!

I stumbled upon your blog & am glad I did because you reminded of how much I love, love, love, love, love, love alligator tail. No, I don't. Never had it. What I meant to say was that I love, love, love, love New Orleans & Oak Alley Plantation. Thanks for taking me back there! And, you're hair...it's cute! Nuttin' but love for it. :)

Alligator tail really does taste like chicken! I had it years ago and was rather amazed that I even tried it, but it's very chickeny.
Looks like a super fun trip!
I love it!! I am in love with plantations. They are big enough, maybe they won't realize if I move in :)
And yummmmmmmmm....crawfish etouffee!

What a great post! Visiting from SITs!
What a great post! Just found your blog today and I love it. :)
Ah, this reminds me of all the places I would love to visit someday, including New Orleans! I know this sounds so un-cultured, but I was watching Real World New Orleans and saw in the background on the side of a building this, "Cold Beer. Mixed Drinks. Juice Boxes. Good Times." I thought that was great.

Never saw the movie though, I refuse to spend a penny on Mr. Cruise.

What a beautiful place to visit! I've never been, but have always wanted to visit. I don't think I could handle the humidity though, so I guess for now I'll stay right here in sunny CA. ;)
